(By clicking magnify you can get a close up look at the door to the bar.)
So, after we did our Fish Fryday, our wives were attending a wedding shower and we still had a goodly amount of time to kill.  During this time we started driving around the city.  The Fish Fry was in extreme south St. Louis, and we live a bit north of there.  So, we just drove around.  For some reason we ended up driving through Benton Park, where my mother lives and then we crossed over into Fox Park, and as we were driving down Lynch Avenue, I saw a Falstaff beer sign on a corner bar.

You know, it really feels like it’s been about a thousand years since I’ve been to a new dive bar.  It has really been two months since I’ve gotten out to a new place.  This time of year though, with my Fish Fryday Series going on, time’s been a little bit short on hitting bars.  Then couple that with the fact that my slinger posts have been picked up by St. Louis City Edition which puts a greater importance on getting out for new slingers, and well my dive bars have kind of gotten ignored.

Let me welcome you to the Special Series, “The 13 Blog On the Road!”  From time to time when I travel, you’ll get a look into where we went and what kind of bars we found.  In early December I got married to my then fiance and now wife.  Our honeymoon was delayed a bit, as I was convinced that going back to school to get all degreed up was a good idea, so our honeymoon, or luna de miel, was in early January.  The wife and I spent a week in sunny Mexico on the Yucatan Penninsula about 30 miles south of Cancun and right outside of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

For those of you following me on twitter, you know I’m a little bit behind on this post. We went on Friday and I’m just now getting this one. What can I say? It’s been a bit of a busy weekend. So, apology over, and let’s get down to it!

I first discovered this South St. Louis gem about 5 months ago. The wife and I were finishing up taking photos of the St. Louis neighborhood signs and we just saw this bar and I decided right then and there that the 13 Blog was going to make a visit. I handed her the BlackBerry and said

This is a story from back in the before time; long, long ago.  It was requested that I post this one, so here it is:

Years ago, Chris and I used to go to Phelan’s on a weekly basis.  It was our home bar.  We both worked retail and we’d kick 10pm like 5pm for normal folks.  So, we’d head out and watch a game, play some tunes on the jukebox and put back three or four beers, or even get their $7.99 steak special, but I think I’m ahead of myself.

On Sunday, the fiancee and I were driving down to the Bevo Neighborhood to visit our friends’ new baby. On our way down there, we saw a few great bars that the 13 Blog had to check out in the very near future. Well, the first one we got to was Colorado Bob’s Ship of Fools. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a great picture of the front of the place, but I did my best!!

When we parked the car and took a look around, the bar’s in what looks to be and old storefront…or perhaps a couple of them.  This gives a unique look and feel to the place.

The first thing you see here is their beer sign.  As you can plainly see, this is a horrid, nasty beer.  I can’t even imagine what Busch Bavarian Style Beer would taste like on draft.  As we discussed in this post, one of the great signs for a good dive is a bad beer sign.

Barristers Clayton, MO

Last night, the fiancee and I headed out on our next trip to a new bar that we’d never been to.  I did some reading, and at STL Meal Deals, I’d heard that Barristers has a great late night happy hour.  So we decided to head out there, with the lady and I both being proud city residents, it took a bit of convincing, but in the end, we headed out off into a part of the county to which, we normally wouldn’t go.  (We have a long running disagreement on this…I say it’s West County because you have to go west to get there…she disagrees.)

What Is A Dive?

Posted: October 15, 2009 in Dive Bar, Faux dive

What is a dive bar? In other words, what are we looking for here at the 13 blog? For me, a dive is a very special kind of place. It’s a bar, that’s always, ALWAYS very dark. (This is unfortunate, as it makes it hard to take quality photos.) So, I’ve got some pictures culled from previous entries and some from entries that never made it to give some ideas as to the differences between a bar and a dive bar.

The fiancee and I had decided to stay at home, watch the Cards, Blues, and Tigers on the TV. I was going to burn down the remote control. She sends me a text on my way home, saying, we’re going out tonight, and you’re buying. Hooray. (At least I got a refund check to offset this cost.)

As we’re on our way to Barney’s Pub on Chippewa, we decide to stop at Joe Bush’s Pizza and Pub. This was a great idea. It’s nestled in the plaza that has sprung up on the ashes of the old Famous Barr Building. It’s a cute little pub. It’s not a dive bar at all, but a sports bar. They had TV’s everywhere. So I could simultaneously watch all three games! Spectacular.

I really enjoyed the place. The patrons were rambunctious as all of our teams crapped the bed. Oh well. I ordered my customary Bourbon and Coke and fiancee ordered up some chicken stuffed nachos. Well I had absolutely no idea what those where.
Yeah, that’s about right. We also had a BBQ Chicken Bacon Pizza.
Very tasty, though let me say, the bacon was extraneous. There was absolutely no need for that bacon…it seem like it was just hucked on there at the last minute.

While we were digging into the pizza, I asked our server (who looked frighteningly familiar and it drove me nuts all night), for a tall bourbon and coke. She, after a pretty long time, came back with a tall bourbon and coke, or so I thought…it was a double tall bourbon and coke…whoops! She apologize and took the blame for the mistake. I wasn’t worried about it and stopped thinking about it.
As we were getting ready to leave, the server came back with the tab and another double tall bourbon and coke. She said, this one’s on the house for my mistake earlier. Personally, I had totally forgotten about that, and wasn’t even going to think about it or not tip her as well. (A lesson to servers everywhere, just suck it up and say you forgot, or it was your fault…I’ll totally forgive that every time.) I handed the keys over at this point….
So I was really enjoying this, and fiancee took a taste, we both agreed that it was really good, and I asked the server what the bourbon was…Jim Beam…she then said incredulously..that’s our WELL bourbon! (What she didn’t mention is that well drinks were $4.)

So, all in all, check this place out and have a pizza, catch a game, and just live it up.

So, we headed out to Screamers on Gravois Rd. last night. As we got there, I noticed there were a whole bunch of newspapers in the window and all the lights were off. I looked over at the fiancee and said holy hell, it’s closed. (As we drove past it later, we saw that it’s being remodeled into an Irish Saloon… it won’t be a dive bar anymore…and I really wanted to play the darts game there. So..we had to choose a new place to go last night. We ended up at CTs in Affton on Hildesheim and Tieman.
