Here we go...

So, Andrew Veety has been on my case for some time regarding the slinger being a variation of the garbage plate. Recently we came to an understanding about these dishes.

So, of course I had to try one right?

I was visiting friends and clients up in the Buffalo and Toronto areas, and I decided to go to a hockey game. Due to simple availability, the Rochester Americans won out. My brother in law tells me that I need to get a garbage plate while I’m there….then the slinger garbage plate twitter conversations spring forth anew! In the end…even though I was by myself in a strange city…I ate a garbage plate and saw the Amerks fall to the Toronto Marlies 2-1…

Made it!

One of the things I’ve heard a lot about over the course of my slinger quest was the horseshoe. I’ve been asked many times if I’ve eaten one, as they’re close to slingers. Well, up until this past weekend, I had never eaten one.
We decided on Thursday that we were going to take a day trip up to Chicago on Saturday…and I knew we’d need to stop somewhere for breakfast and I decided this would be a great time to stop somewhere for a breakfast shoe.

I didn’t even know that there were two different kinds until Thursday. I was told that Charlie Parker’s Diner was the place to go. I’d never heard of the place. I didn’t even know they were famous. Yeah had no idea.

We had a bit of a gps snafu…i.e. following directions, but we arrived safely at about 8am on Saturday morning. Upon arrival I was wondering if I made a mistake in choosing this place for breakfast because it was PACKED and we were on a time frame…

Taken at a jewelry store in London, ON.

I’ve been someone who’s admired our friends in the Great White North for many a year. It started when I didn’t know that I was watching Canadian Television on Nickelodeon…Fifteen, You Can’t Do That On Television, Degrassi Junior High, SCTV, Kids In The Hall…then I got older and became a serious hockey fan, and that just made it worse.

I’ve been a hockey fan for years and years. For awhile, I used to buy the NHL Center Ice package on Dish Network. Then I’d watch every Canadian broadcast I could find. In doing this, I saw about a thousand commercials for places like Boston Pizza, Pizza Pizza, and Tim Hortons. So for years I’ve had these images swimming in my head…Poutine…Tim Hortons…and I’d never had them…then having Canadian clients talk about them…it just made me want them even more than I already did…well I was up in and about Ontario this past winter…

Hello! Hello! It’s been awhile, yes, I’m well aware and for that I apologize, but I cannot tell you just how busy I’ve gotten over the past few months.  Not to tell you too much, but this is my biggest class schedule, my best friend got married in Buffalo, my soccer blog has taken off, we’re expecting a little one, and I even have a small gig with a Pro Soccer Team in the area.

I am trying to get back into the swing of things, and I do have to say…it’s getting harder and harder to find slingers these days.  I’ve been to 26 different restaurants looking for them, so please as always, help me find new ones.  Today, we’re revisiting an old idea I had, the 13 Blog on the road.  I mentioned my best friend got married, but I didn’t mention that I was also the best man…it’s been an interesting few weeks!

Let me welcome you to the Special Series, “The 13 Blog On the Road!”  From time to time when I travel, you’ll get a look into where we went and what kind of bars we found.  In early December I got married to my then fiance and now wife.  Our honeymoon was delayed a bit, as I was convinced that going back to school to get all degreed up was a good idea, so our honeymoon, or luna de miel, was in early January.  The wife and I spent a week in sunny Mexico on the Yucatan Penninsula about 30 miles south of Cancun and right outside of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Those of you who follow me on Twitter or the facebook page may have already heard about this, but here goes!  There are actually two new series of posts that I’m happy to announce today.  Neither one will be as regular as the dive bars or the slinger posts though.   There are a couple things that the 13 blog loves doing as much as dive bars or slingers, and that’s fish frys and travelling.  So I am proud to introduce…..
